Overview

I am currently a Professor in Medicine (Gastroenterology) within the University of Manchester, whilst also holding a clinical academic contract, delivering clinical care at Salford Royal Hospital NHS Trust for 50% of my contracted time. Below, is a brief synopsis of my academic career to date.

Over the last 8 years, I have also been involved in the direct supervision of four MD Fellows, seight PhD students and three MPhil students. During this time, I have become proficient in the training and mentoring of graduate students, both in terms of the guidance and necessary support, and in terms of the academic process. As part of this process, I hold fortnightly half day team based meetings as well as conducting day to day regular mentoring activity. I am also lead academic clinician for the NIHR integrated academic training programme in GI Sciences at the University of Manchester.

My research has attracted ~ £4 million in external grant income including MRC, Wellcome and NIHR research grants. I have now published over 90 peer-reviewed research papers with an h-factor >32, and have contributed to 8 books. In addition, I have been invited to present over 100 state of the art lectures, both at national and international conferences.

In the last 5 years, in collaboration with the University of Manchester Intellectual Property Ltd, I have been developing treatments for swallowing problems after stroke. This has resulted in a spin out company, Phagenesis Ltd, which has now secured follow-on investment. My additional interests in faecal incontinence have also resulted in the development of a diagnostic device which is currently undergoing clinical evaluation with a view to future commercialisation and adoption for use within the health service.

I have been actively involved in helping to deliver the undergraduate medical school curriculum in the form of SSM, Project Options, Bedside Clinical Teaching, OSCE exams and undergraduate admission interviews and screening. From 2005-2008, I was clinical lead for Project Options in the Salford Sector. I was also clinical academic lead for Gastrointestinal Sciences in the previous Faculty structure which has now been replaced by the new Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology.

Externally, I sit on the NICE medical technologies advsiory committee, am Ex-chair of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility section of the British Society of Gastroenterology and hold a number of steering committee positions across academic units within the UK.
