Research & Teaching Interests
Professor Bacq’s primary research interests include social entrepreneurship, governance and management issues in social enterprises, and societal-level impact. Her teaching interests include social entrepreneurship, microfinance, and entrepreneurship.
Professor Bacq’s research has been published in leading academic journals such as Academy of Management Review, California Management Review, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, Journal of Business Ethics, and Journal of Small Business Management. She has also co-edited several books on those topics.
She has enjoyed presenting her research at numerous institutions across Europe and the United States. Professor Bacq is also an active participant in the two most important management and entrepreneurship conferences, the Academy of Management and the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference, for which I regularly review papers, serve as discussant, chair, or PDW organizer.
Industry & Academic Experience
Prior to joining Northeastern University, Professor Bacq was a Visiting Scholar at New York University Stern School of Business from August 2010 to August 2012. She has also held positions as a doctoral research fellow at the Intercollegiate Center for Management Science from 2009 to 2012 and as a teaching and research assistant at the Université Catholique de Louvain from 2006 to 2009.
She is an Associate Editor at the Journal of Social Entrepreneurship and serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Business Venturing, and also regularly reviews manuscripts for leading management and entrepreneurship journals (e.g., Administrative Science Quarterly, Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, Journal of Management Studies, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Strategic Management Journal).

Sophie Bacq, PhD is an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at Indiana University Kelley School of Business. A leading scholar in social entrepreneurship, she investigates and theorizes about entrepreneurial action aiming to solve intractable social and environmental problems, at the individual, organizational and civic levels of analysis. Sophie has taught and conducted empirical research on the topic in Europe, the United States and South Africa. Her research has been published in the top management and entrepreneurship journals including Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Discoveries, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Academy of Management Perspectives, California Management Review, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Venturing, and Journal of Small Business Management, and she has co-edited three books on social entrepreneurship. She is the co-Director of The Annual Social Entrepreneurship Conference, one of the premiere academic gatherings on the topic.
