Booth School of Business

Combining operational excellence and financial discipline with values-based leadership to accelerate change and drive innovation, Sonny Garg is a seasoned executive who has led organizations through critical points of inflection, including large-scale integrations and disruptive innovation. He recently joined Uptake, an advanced analytics company building solutions for the next generation of the Industrial Internet and the Internet of things, to lead their energy solutions team.

Prior to Uptake, Sonny spent 13 years at Exelon Corporation, a Fortune 125 company, in a variety of senior executive positions, including serving as a member of the Executive Committee. Most recently, he was Chief Information and Innovation Officer (CIIO), where he developed and executed a strategy for Exelon’s $1B IT department designed to rapidly adapt to the changes in technology and the energy industry. He also was accountable for defining and driving a culture of innovation at Exelon, and for designing and implementing Exelon's cybersecurity program.

Prior to being CIIO, Sonny was the President of Exelon Power, where he oversaw the operations of 8,500 MW of generating assets. During the 2008 financial crisis, Sonny designed and executed Exelon’s $350M cost reduction initiative. He also has served as Exelon’s Senior Vice President for Human Resources.

Sonny began his career in the public and non-profit sectors, serving as an Assistant to Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and was appointed a White House Fellow by President Clinton. Prior to these positions, he was a research associate at the University of Chicago’s Chapin Hall Center for Children.

Sonny is a Henry Crown Leadership Fellow at the Aspen Institute and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He currently serves as a guest lecturer at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

Sonny earned a M.B.A. and a B.A. at the University of Chicago, and a M.P.P. from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
