Biography

National University of Singapore

Prof Hum Sin Hoon obtained his B. Commerce and B. Eng (Hons) as a Colombo Plan Scholar from the University of Newcastle, Australia. He received his PhD in Production/Operations Management from the Anderson School at UCLA.

Prof Hum is currently with the Department of Analytics & Operations at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He currently serves as the Deputy Dean of the NUS Business School.

Prof Hum had earlier completed his term as the Dean of The NUS Business School. He had also earlier served as the Head of Decision Sciences Department there. Prof Hum had also been a member of the NUS Council and the NUS Senate.

Prof Hum had also served as a Board member of the East Asian Institute, and the Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS). At ISEAS, Prof Hum had served as the Chairman of its Audit Committee.

Prof Hum recently completed his second term of service as a member of the National Productivity Council chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Currently, Prof Hum chairs the Management Board of the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls School and serves as an independent director on the Board of Tembusu Partners Pte Ltd.

Prior to joining the University, Prof Hum worked as a Systems Engineer in the Ministry of Defence and participated in several studies aimed at optimizing the use of various types of training resources and systems. He had also conducted executive teaching and/or served as a consultant to both public and private organizations including the Singapore National Computer Board, the Jurong Town Corporation, the Port of Singapore Authority, the Singapore Trade Development Board, Apple Computer Singapore, SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Shanghai, Sri Bayu Resort Malaysia, Amari Hotels and Resorts Thailand, Sun International Group, Mauritius, CWT Distribution Ltd, UPS Worldwide Logistics Asia Pte Ltd, Royal Brunei Airlines and Singapore Airlines.

Prof Hum`s current area of active consulting work is in the area of Balanced Scorecard design and usage. Indeed, in this area of work, Prof Hum has helped to build and implement close to a hundred balanced scorecards at different organisational levels. Some companies and government agencies Prof Hum has worked with in this area include Ascendas, RCL, the Sun Group, Fritz Logistics, YCH Group, CWT, JTC, NEA, CAAS, LTA, MPA, and various units of the Ministry of Defence.

Prof Hums current research interests are in the areas of operations strategy, Just-in-Time manufacturing and modelling analysis of supply chain systems. His research has been published in various journals includingOperations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Naval Research Logistics, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Singapore Management Review and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Management. Prof Hum has also recently published a book entitled Zheng Hes Art of Collaboration, which has been very well received by the business commun
