A graduate of the University of Guelph and The University of Western Ontario, Dr. Staples joined Smith School of Business in 1998, after two years as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia. His papers have appeared in such journals as Information Systems Research, Organization Science, Journal of Management Information Systems and The Journal of Strategic Information Systems and he is a regular contributor to international conferences. Much of his research has been conducted in collaboration with colleagues in Canada, Australia and the United States and he is a recent recipient of a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In 2001, Dr. Staples was awarded Smith School of Business New Researcher Award – an annual honour to the faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her chosen research field within 7 years of receiving their PhD and was awarded a Distinguished Faculty Research Fellowship in 2007.

Dr. Staples'' research focuses on how technology enables and affects works practices in organizations. Building on previous research in virtual teams and knowledge sharing, he is currently investigating how collaborative technologies can help manage the diversity within distributed teams. Dr. Staples'' recent publications include: Exploring Traditional and Virtual Team Members'' "Best Practices": A Social Cognitive Theory Perspective; Exploring the Effect of Trust, Task Interdependence and Virtualness on Knowledge Sharing in Teams; The Effects of Cultural Diversity in Virtual Teams versus Face-To-Face Teams; and Toward Contextualized Theories of Trust: The Role of Trust in Global Virtual Teams. Dr. Staples earned his Ph.D. from the Richard Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario.
