Biography
Leonard N. Stern School of Business
Dr. Abrantes-Metz, Co-Leader of Brattle’s global Antitrust & Competition practice, has over two decades of economics experience and is skilled in providing antitrust and market analyses. She pioneered the development and application of empirical screens to detect potential collusion, manipulation, and fraud.
Dr. Abrantes-Metz has used empirical screens to uncover the rigging of LIBOR and other financial benchmarks. She has advised multiple agencies in five continents on their adoption of these screens, which are now commonly used worldwide.
Additionally, Dr. Abrantes-Metz is experienced in multisided platform matters, event studies, and valuation. She has testified on these topics on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants, from governmental agencies (including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Department of Justice) to private institutions. Her testimony has also included price artificiality and damages, causation, class certification, bid-rigging, price-fixing and market allocation, market manipulation, fraud, valuation, market definition, mergers and acquisitions, monopolization, and benchmarks reform.
Dr. Abrantes-Metz’s work spans a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, oil and natural gas, transportation, catering, technology and innovation, payments systems and electronic transactions, foreclosures and evictions, trading and pricing algorithms, high-frequency trading and spoofing, precious metals and other commodities, and financial instruments spanning multiple markets.
A well-published author, Dr. Abrantes-Metz has written extensively for academic journals, industry publications, and mainstream media publications such as The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and Bloomberg. She is regularly interviewed by these outlets and more than a dozen others, including The Economist, Investor’s Business Daily, Reuters, Sky News, and BNN Bloomberg.
Dr. Abrantes-Metz has been included in Who’s Who Legal’s list of Competition Economists since 2009. In 2019, she was recognized among four competition economists on W@’s “40 in their 40’s” Notable Women Competition Professionals in the Americas, for which 36 distinguished lawyers and four distinguished economists were selected among North, Central, and South American professional women.
In addition to her consulting work, Dr. Abrantes-Metz is a senior competition policy advisor for the World Bank. She is a former Adjunct Associate Professor at the NYU Stern School of Business, and a former Lecturer at The University of Chicago and Portuguese Catholic University.
