Rory O'Shea

Biography

Dr. Rory O'Shea is an Associate Professor of Management in the College of Business at University College Dublin. His research specialises in digital innovation, technology strategy and the management of innovation. Within these domain areas, he has investigated topics such as: (1) the strategies used by universities and firms to manage intellectual property and the technology transfer process, (2) the resource assembly processes that are involved in the scale-up of innovation-based enterprises, and (3) the institutional dynamics that create vibrant regional entrepreneurial and creative ecosystems. In recent times, he has examined the role and importance of academic freedom in the context of managing government-industry-university partnerships.

He has published in many of the leading international academic journals in the field of innovation management such as Research Policy, R&D Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management and Organization Studies. He has co-edited a book volume entitled, Building Technology Transfer within Research Universities, An Entrepreneurial Approach (Cambridge University Press). He has also contributed to a number of influential policy-related articles on technology policy and startups in Bloomberg Businessweek, Entrepreneur Inc, NBC News, Financial Times, Forbes, Sunday Independent and The Irish Times.

Prior to joining the UCD faculty in 2006, Rory completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Sloan School of Management, MIT. From 2012-14, he also served as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at MIT Sloan. Rory's industry experience includes consulting experience at a leading management consulting firm. During his time there he worked on a number of organisational development projects with international clients in the communications and high-tech sector. He is founder of Entrepreneurship Network, a social entrepreneurship portal which aims to democratise expert knowledge in innovation-based entrepreneurship. Whilst an undergraduate student at UCD, Rory was elected Auditor (president) of the Commerce and Economics Society and under his leadership the society grew to become the largest student society in Ireland and was honoured with the award for 'UCD Society of the Year'. He is a recipient of the UCD President's Award and he has played tennis at inter-provincial level and for UCD. Outside of work much of Rory's time revolves around enjoying a variety of family activities and supporting the Kilkenny hurling team.
