Rocco Chiou

Biography

I grew up in Taiwan, a place most people in the western world know for its political tension with a nearby country. Like many kids growing up in a collectivist society, I was growing up feeling confused and frustrated by the conflict between being yourself and being someone people expect you to be. This led me to study psychology, with the hope to understand more about human nature.

After completing my undergraduate and Master studies, I was awarded a Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship. I moved to Sydney and did my PhD under the supervision of Dr Anina Rich on multisensory perception and synaesthesia. After completing my PhD, I went on to work with Dr Joel Pearson at the University of New South Wales, exploring the sensory representation of colour and motion. I then received a Stepping Stone Fellowship, funded by the Institutional Strategic Support Fund scheme of the Wellcome Trust, which brought me to Manchester to collaborate with Prof Matthew Lambon Ralph. In 2016, I was awarded a Sir Henry Wellcome Fellowhip that supports my 4-year research projects on the mechanisms that underpin perceiving and knowing about visual environment. I''m currently based jointly at University of Manchester and Harvard University, where I work with Dr Talia Konkle on the mechanisms of object recognition.
