Biography
-
Much of my work has taken place where people, organizations, and society combine with information, technology, and decision making. More recently the focus has been on ways that government agencies and organizations can use Social Media, Knowledge Management, and Web 2.0 technologies to improve performance. I have also done work in risk management related to homeland security. The juxtaposition of open social networks, benefits derived from information sharing, and concerns related to privacy and risk made this an exciting area. Topics for executive-level presentations included: Social Networking for Senior Executives, Emerging Technologies (e.g., Web 2.0, Real-time web), Technology for Homeland Defense and Security, Managing the Future of IT in Medicine (this related to my interest in benefits to society), Managing Your Business in the Information Age: Information Systems and Technologies. In my past life as a business school professor, I taught information systems consulting, information systems strategy, project management, business process analysis and re-design, and systems analysis and design. As far as I can tell, I was the first person at a major university to teach object-oriented analysis and design using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) (Univ. of MN 1997). I have been creating web-based learning environments since 1997. Prior to that, I worked in financial services, manufacturing, and distribution as a project manager, internal consultant, auditor, and accountant. At various times I have had my own businesses in financial services and information technologies and was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant for 10 years. I have also served on the board, as an associate editor, or reviewer for leading journals and conference committees including Homeland Security Affairs, Management Science, ISR, MIS Quarterly, JMIS, ICIS, HICSS; was a Ph.D. program coordinator at USC; and have served on numerous Ph.D. dissertation and masters thesis committees. Specialties: Information and Decision Sciences including Knowledge Management, Risk Management, and Decision Making Under Uncertainty. Information System Strategy and Design including Social Media and Web 2.0. Business Process Management and Individual and Organizational Performance Management.
