Biography

Kevin B. Lowe is Professor in Leadership in the Business School at the University of Sydney. A recognized leader in the field of leadership, Kevin is on ten editorial boards including The Leadership Quarterly (Associate Editor), Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Leadership, Journal of World Business, and Group and Organization Management.

His research has garnered a number of awards including twice winning the Best Paper of the Year Award from The Leadership Quarterly, the Article of the Decade Award from the Journal of International Business Studies, and the Decennial Influential Article Award from The Leadership Quarterly. In 2017 he received an Emerald Citation of Excellence, recognizing articles of high impact over the most recent three years (2014-2016), for his review and extension of the field of followership.

An enthusiastic teacher Kevin received the Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award recognizing teaching excellence across the seventeen campus University of North Carolina system and was nominated for a CASE U.S. Professor of the Year Award. He regularly speaks to faculty and doctoral student audiences on the topic of teaching excellence.

Professor Lowe serves on the Board of Directors of the International Leadership Association, the Southern Management Association and the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management. He serves on the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council, is a Fellow of the Centre for Leadership Studies at Lancaster University (UK), and a Fellow of the Southern Management Association.

Research interests

Kevin’s disciplinary background is organizational behavior and his research focus is on leadership and followership. Within this focus Kevin is also interested in leading across differences including differences across national cultures and a focus on diversity and inclusion in a domestic context.

Kevin’s leadership research has made significant and continuing contributions to the research literature and practice of transformational leadership. His work on cross cultural management has also been widely cited. This work has been recognized with several awards including twice winning the Best Paper of the Year Award from The Leadership Quarterly, the Article of the Decade Award from the Journal of International Business Studies, and the Decennial Influential Article Award from The Leadership Quarterly. His more recent work on Followership was recognized with an Emerald Citation of Excellence, recognizing articles of high impact over the most recent three years.

Kevin’s most recent research is focused on leadership in healthcare, leader humility, the role of leadership perceptions in voting behavior, and the evolution of leadership theory. Kevin contributes heavily to the work of other scholars through service on several editorial boards including The Leadership Quarterly where he has been an Associate Editor for fifteen years, and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, Leadership, Journal of World Business, and Group and Organization Management.

Kevin also serves the research profession through several professional roles such as keynote speaker to international conferences, speaking to doctoral consortiums, and conducting conference workshops on data analytic techniques such as meta-analysis. Further service to the research community includes serving on the Boards of several research focused organizations including International Leadership Association, the Southern Management Association and the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management.
