Commander Kevin J. Haney is a 1981 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. After graduation, CDR Haney attended naval flight officer training in Pensacola, FL, achieving his Navy 1983 as a Radar Intercept Officer. Assigned to the F-14 Tomcat, CDR Haney completed Replacement Squadron Training at Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ONE (VF-101) in Oceana, Virginia. Following Replacement Training, CDR Haney was assigned to Fighter Squadron ELEVEN (VF-11) as part of Carrier Air Wing SIX (CVW-6) embarked in USS FORRESTAL (CV59) where he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea in support of US national security objectives. In 1987, CDR Haney was selected as a flight instructor and transferred back to VF-101 where he taught airborne air combat tactics to replacement fighter pilots. He was selected for and attended the Navy's prestigious Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) in 1988. In 1990 he joined the Fighting Gypsies of Fighter Squadron THIRTY-TWO as a department head as part of Carrier Air Wing THREE (CVW-3) embarked in USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67). While in VF-32, CDR Haney deployed in support of OPERATION DESERT SHIELD and OPERATION DESERT STORM where he participated in combat operations over Iraq, flying 35 combat missions and hundreds of sorties.
In 1993, CDR Haney was selected to attend the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University under the Navy's Advanced Education Program. He graduated from Fletcher in 1995 with a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy. In 1995 CDR Haney was assigned to United States Central Command where he served as the Executive Officer to the Director of Operations and as a Crisis Plans Officer. In 1998, CDR Haney transferred to USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN74) as Air Operations Officer and Assistant Air Officer where he deployed to the Western Pacific and Arabian Sea in support of US national security objectives. In 2000, CDR Haney was selected to teach Political Science at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and served as the department's Associate Chairman and Faculty Chairman of the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference. In 2005 CDR Haney transferred to the United States Air Force Academy where he taught in the Political Science Department and was awarded the academic rank of Assistant Professor and named the Outstanding Academy Educator in Political Science for 2006. CDR Haney's teaching and research interests include Leadership, US National Security Policy, Southwest Asian Culture, History and Politics and American Government. On 1 November 2007, CDR Haney retired from active commissioned service and serves as the USNA Class of 1971 Distinguished Military Professor of Leadership.
CDR Haney has accumulated over 2800 tactical flight hours and 850 carrier arrested landings in multiple aircraft. He has been awarded numerous individual decorations for valor in combat and for multiple foreign deployments and service.
