Biography

The UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School

Professor Karan Sonpar joined University College Dublin in 2009. He earned his PhD from the University of Alberta, Canada. He has held prior academic appointments at IE Business School, Spain and University of Manitoba, Canada. He served as Captain in the Indian Army prior to his PhD. His work has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Organizational Research Methods. He also currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal Management Inquiry and is a member of the editorial board of Human Relations. Karan's primary research and teaching interests are in the broad areas of the exercise of leadership discretion in the face of competing demands from institutions and stakeholders, behavioural approaches to strategy, managing talent, and managing risk. He is a winner of an Early Career Research Award at UCD, a Professor of the Year Teaching Award at University of Manitoba, Canada and a Teaching Award at University of Alberta, Canada. He regularly delivers executive training on the topics of managing talent, strategic planning, and leadership for organisations such as A&L Goodbody, Almac, Alltech, Agilent, PwC, Microsoft, ICON, Ericsson, Dairygold, Dawn Foods, CIE, DJEI, and Mater Hospital.
