Jonathan Q. Purnell, MD, graduated medical school from Oregon Health & Science University, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Vermont, and his endocrine fellowship training at the University of Washington.

He is an associate professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in the dvision of edocrinology, diabetes, and clinical nutrition, and a faculty member of the Center for the Study of Weight Regulation, a research institute at OHSU dedicated to the study of disorders of weight regulation including obesity and cachexia.

His clinical research interests include the causes and consequences of central obesity, effect of intensive diabetes therapy on weight gain in patients with type-1 and type-2 diabetes, and mechanisms of how changes in diet composition (fat, carbohydrate, and protein) affect appetite and body weight in humans. He also directs an obesity/metabolism clinic.
