Former bureau chief at UPI and former assistant city editor at the Boston Globe, Professor Klarfeld is a veteran reporter and freelance magazine writer. Among other assignments, he also was a general assignment reporter and district court columnist for the Globe. He also was a reporter and arts and book editor at the Holyoke Transcript-Telegram and a reporter and rewriteman at the Boston Record-American. He was media critic for the Boston Herald for more than two years and he was restaurant critic for the the Boston Phoenix. As well as teaching his reporting and writing courses during the fall and spring semesters, he currently teaches a culinary journalism course at COM during Summer Term. He is in charge of both undergraduate and graduate-level professional internships for journalism students at COM. He directs the Print and Online Journalism Program.

His freelance work has been published in The Sunday Times of London; Diversion Magazine; The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine; Saveur Magazine; Boston Magazine; Oceans Magazine; Metro Boston Magazine; Boston Review of the Arts; New Bedford Standard-Times Op-Ed; Boston Herald Sunday Magazine; The Boston Phoenix; Globe Book Review; Herald Sports; Herald Book Review; Bostonia magazine and Herald Op-Ed page.

In addition to his journalistic experience, he served as a political press secretary and worked briefly in public relations. He has testified as an expert witness in court cases concerning First Amendment rights and journalistic standards, and has been an editorial consultant and writing coach for several publications. He has written several novels, is currently working on a new one, and is seeking an agent for any and all of them.
