Boston University

Professor Carroll is a veteran of both the advertising and journalism worlds. For five years he was executive producer of news programs at WGBH-TV in Boston; for the three years previous to that, he was producer/panelist on the daily show Greater Boston and the weekly program Beat the Press. Over the past 20 years he has also written extensively on advertising and the media as a regular columnist for the Boston Globe and Adweek magazine, and as a commentator on WBUR-FM and National Public Radio. Carroll has won numerous national and regional journalism awards, including the RTNDA’s Edward R. Murrow award for writing, the National Press Club’s Arthur Rowse award for press criticism, and multiple New England Emmys for commentary and news writing. In addition, he spent almost two decades as a creative director and consultant in the advertising industry

Sloan School of Management

John Carroll is the Gordon Kaufman Professor of Management, a Professor of Organization Studies and Engineering Systems, and the Co-Director of the Lean Advancement Initiative at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Carroll is an excellent source for information on individual and group decision making, with a focus on its relationship to organizational learning and change practices such as self-assessment and root cause analysis. His recent work focuses on industries that manage significant hazards, such as nuclear power, petrochemicals, and healthcare. He has examined the relationships among leadership, management philosophies, teamwork, mental models, safety culture, and human performance improvement.

Carroll holds a BS in physics from MIT, as well as an MA and a PhD in social psychology from Harvard University.
