Biography

The London School of Economics and Political Science

Dr Hyun-Jung Lee is Assistant Professor in the Department of Management. Her research interests include cross-cultural management, cosmopolitanism, intercultural collaboration and prosocial behaviour. Trained as a psychologist, her research focusses on intra-individual, group, and organisational processes which help individuals collaborate across group, organizational, and symbolic boundaries. She has published in leading management journals including Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies.

Dr Lee received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Psychology at Seoul National University, and PhD at the LSE (Dissertation title: Affective states at work and prosocial organisational behaviour). After completing her PhD, Dr Lee had travelled intensely around the world (some of the interesting destinations include Siberia, Mongolia, China, India, East Africa, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt) to see how people in different cultures see, perceive, think and live differently, which had triggered a major shift in her research interests to cross cultural management. Dr Lee then studied the History of Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts (Western Arts from Impressionism to 90’s); started writing as a part-time music journalist to regularly review new opera productions staged in London Covent Garden and major European theatres for a leading Korean performing arts magazine. These Arts- and Music-related activities played a pivotal role in shaping her current research focus- cultures, cosmopolitanism and intercultural collaborations.

Dr Lee is an active member of the Academy of International Business and Academy of Management; and has been nominated and won awards from these associations for her research. She is also active in engaging with industry and corporate education, especially on cross-cultural issues lately. Prior to LSE, Dr Lee was Assistant Professor in OB at KAIST Graduate School of Management.
