Biography

His fields of special interest in economics include econometrics, science policy, and the evolution of postsecondary education. He was a member of President Bush’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology, chaired the Institute of Medicine’s Committee to Study Employer-Based Health Benefits, and currently serves as chair of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission. The editor (with former Princeton President William G. Bowen) of Universities and Their Leadership, his published works include A Regional Econometric Forecasting System—Major Economic Areas of Michigan (coauthor) and Tradition and Change. A member of the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has taught at the University of Michigan (in addition to serving as its president) and has been a research scientist at the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations and at the Institute of Public Policy Studies.
