Gui Deng Say

Dr. GuiDeng Say is an Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University. Dr. Say obtained his PhD in Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He was awarded a scholarship to pursue a dual Master’s degree in International Management at the London School of Economics, HEC Paris and the National University of Singapore where he also received his B.Eng in Environmental Engineering.

Gui Deng cares deeply about societal well-being and examines through the lens of stakeholder management the major causes of social problems: namely organizational failures and misconduct. Across a variety of novel contexts including data breaches, socially-motivated divestments, and more recently the Panama papers, he investigates how firms learn and strategically respond to these failures. In a separate but related research stream on emerging economies, he leads an inductive study examining how rural Vietnamese entrepreneurs’ health conditions influence their business decisions. Gui Deng is an active scholar whose work has been published in leading academic periodicals including the Academy of Management Journal.

Gui Deng’s passion for teaching has earned him teaching awards at both the Carlson School and at LKCSB. He also shares his excitement for learning in his hobby as a PADI scuba diving instructor.

Prior to academia, Dr. Say worked alongside development agencies. As a microfinance consultant, he conducted impact evaluations at the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and at TYM Microfinance Institution in Vietnam, where he was also invited to be the keynote speaker for their 20th anniversary celebration.
