Australia and New Zealand School of Government

Dr George Argyrous received his PhD in Economics from the New School for Social Research in New York. He is a Senior Lecturer at ANZSOG on secondment from the School of Social Sciences at The University of New South Wales, where he has taught political economy, research methods and statistics since 1992, publishing many articles on the use and abuse of research. He is also the author of the popular international text Statistics for Research, which is now in its third edition and has been translated into Chinese, and the editor of Evidence for Policy and Decision-making: A Practical Guide (UNSW Press). He is also the Managing Editor of ANZSOG’s peer-reviewed journal Evidence Base.

Dr Argyrous has acted as a consultant to many public and private sector agencies on a wide range of research projects and evaluation, including the Health Education Training Institute, Family and Community Services NSW, Urbis Keys Young, the NSW Police Service, LegalAid NSW, Optus Communications, the NSW Department of Education, and the Australian Council for the Arts.

Some recent work includes:

Expert Advisor to the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet for the development of the Whole of Government Evaluation Framework. Independent Chair for the Brotherhood of St Laurance and Hanover Welfare Trust Evaluation Advisory Group, providing oversight to their evaluation of the Youth Foyer homelessness program. Expert Advisor to the Australia Council for Arts for the development of their Art Nation: An Overview of Australian Arts, measuring the scale and type of artistic activity in Australia. Expert Advisor to the National Disaster Recovery Programs Branch, Commonwealth Attorney General’s Department, developing a national monitoring and evaluation framework for disaster recovery programs.
