Biography

Dr. Fauzia Ahmad received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1997 from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. From 1998 to 2001, she held various academic positions overseas. From 2002 to 2016, she was a Research Professor and the Director of the Radar Imaging Lab with the Center for Advanced Communications, College of Engineering, Villanova University, Villanova. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and Director of the Multi-modal Sensing and Imaging (MSI) Lab at the College of Engineering, Temple University, Philadelphia.

Dr. Ahmad's research interests lie in the areas of array and statistical signal processing, computational imaging with applications in radar and ultrasonics, compressive sensing, machine learning, waveform design, radar systems including SAR, MIMO radar and passive radar, and structural heath monitoring. She has nine book chapters and over 250 journal and conference papers in the aforementioned areas. She is the recipient of the several awards, including the IEEE M. Barry Carlton Award for the 2014 best paper in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, IEEE Harry Rowe Mimno Award for the 2016 best article in the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine, IET Premier Award for the 2016 best paper in IET Radar, Sonar, & Navigation, and the 2019 IET Outstanding Editor Award. She has also given numerous invited lectures, including the keynote talk on "Human Gross Motor Activity Recognition in Emerging Radar Applications" at the International Conference on Radar, Brisbane, Australia in August 2018.

Dr. Ahmad is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a Fellow of the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE). She served as a chair/co-chair of the SPIE Big Data Conference Series (2019-2022), chair of the SPIE Compressive Sensing Conference Series (2012-2018), Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging (2019-2022), Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (2017-2019), Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (2014-2018), Associate Editor of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters (2015-2018), Subject Editor (Signal and Image Processing) of the IET Journal of Engineering (2017-2019), Editorial board member of the IET Radar, Sonar, & Navigation (2013-2022), and Associate Editor of the SPIE Journal of Electronic Imaging (2013-2017). She was a Guest Editor of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing April-2021 Special Issue on Tensor Decomposition for Signal Processing and Machine Learning and Digital Signal Processing October-2020 Special Issue on Optimum Sparse Arrays and Sensor Placement for Environment Sensing. She was the Lead Guest Editor of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine March-2016 Special Issue on Signal Processing for Assisted Living, the Lead Guest Editor of the IET Radar, Sonar & Navigation February-2015 Special Issue on Radar Applied to Remote Patient Monitoring and Eldercare, and the Lead Guest Editor of the SPIE/IS&T Journal of Electronic Imaging April-June 2013 Special Section on Compressive Sensing for Imaging.

Dr. Ahmad is a member of the Computational Imaging Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, a member of the Synthetic Aperture technical Working Group of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and a member of the Electrical Cluster of the Franklin Institute Committee on Science and the Arts. She is the Past Chair of the IEEE Dennis J. Picard Medal for Radar Technologies and Applications Committee, a past member of the Radar Systems Panel of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society (2014-2020), and a past member of the Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (2015-2021). She also chairs the Philadelphia Chapter of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society.

Dr. Ahmad has been a Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, and Co-Investigator on various projects with the total research awards exceeding $9M. These projects have been funded by the Army Research Office (ARO), Army Research Lab (ARL), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC).
