Personal profile

Research interests

I am interested in helping groups find innovative solutions to organizational challenges and creating opportunities to implement and sustain those solutions. I explore issues that surround group engagement and interaction, especially in dealing with social, cultural and strategic change that is required to address complex organizational problems, particularly in relation to the interoperability of power and authority.

My work hinges upon a multidisciplinary framework of ideas and thoughts which predominantly take a generative ontology, i.e. going beyond the duality of structure and agency to conceptualize agential practice as structuring and structured simultaneously. This enables me to examine two significant but interrelated areas that act as precondition for change:

  • human dispositions, embodied during the intergenerational transmission of culture, which shape  behaviour; and
  • human social (inter)-action and positioning in coping with the disruption and destablization of values and beliefs.

There are three broad strands to my work:

  • class and social reproduction
  • group space and dynamics
  • action learning and action research;

Willing to supervise PhD

I am interested in supervising doctoral students looking to undertake interdisciplinary and qualitative research broadly in the areas of organisational learning, leadership development, knowledge management, management education and HRD. I particularly welcome research which challenges the limits of orthodoxy and concentrates on bringing to fore the complexities surrounding human social interaction within the context of learning and change.
