Summary

Eliana Barrenho studies innovation, productivity and health needs. She has a number of papers examining R&D productivity in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically the role of competition and alliances between firms; location and direction of R&D investment and competition; and policy determinants for the R&D investment and adoption of new products.

Recent work examines the effect of policy interventions and networks on the diffusion of new technologies in health systems.

She also studies incentive mechanisms in markets where there is traditionally issues related to market failures and therefore lack of innovation. She also researches on issues of innovation and equity access to therapies in developing countries, with particular focus on the neglected diseases.

Eliana holds a PhD in health economics from Imperial College London. She previously held positions at Paris School of Economics, Imperial College Business School, University of York, London School of Economics and Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She is a Research Affiliate at Chaire Hospinnomics and Nova Health Care Initiative.
