Presentation
My research is based in the fields of anthropological linguistics and qualitative sociolinguistics. I have done research on language policy, English as a corporate language, English and identity in youth language, and language in blue-collar workplaces. The focus of my current research is linguistic diversity in the workplace, including investigations of language ideologies, language socialisation and social inclusion and exclusion in linguistically diverse workplaces.
I work ethnographically and have an interest in developing new methods for the ethnographic investigation of linguistic diversity, including a focus on the role and identity of the researcher in ethnographic studies.
As part of the collaborative research project Transient Multilingual Communities, I investigate settings where individuals with a range of sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds come together for a limited period of time to work on a shared activity. Specifically we are interested in how social and linguistic norms are formed in interaction, i.e. how these communities achieve successful collaboration. The project is funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research, Humanities, for the period 2016-2019.
Primary research areas
- Linguistic diversity in the workplace
- Language ideologies
- English as a corporate language
