Research interests: a) Product development management: Project types and their contribution to competitiveness, The role of product platforms,  Cross-functional integration and project organization. b) Product development in industrial systems: Development activities deployment, Development sourcing. c) Production system design:  Global production networks,  Sourcing and partnership, outsourcing and off-shoring, Lean production.

Research areas: Strategies for and Management of Global Industrial Networks including managerial aspects of technology and corporate strategy, technological development, product development and innovation processes, and production system design and development.In the field of strategy the focus is on strategies for complex industrial corporations and the development of global industrial networks. In the field of technological development a particular interest is in technology strategies and the strategic management of technology. In the field of product development and innovation processes all aspects of the process from idea generation to the realizing of products, goods as well as services, are studied. In the field of production system development Christer Karlsson has a particular interest in lean systems and the development and implementation of next generation production systems. The research has an interdisciplinary and management oriented approach. Much of the research is carried out in "clinical" projects taking active part in the change processes.
