Biography
I am a lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering, leader of the Civil Engineering Teaching Group, and Deputy Director of Research (RGI) of the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering.
I graduated with first class honours cum laude in Civil Engineering from the University of Sannio (Italy). In 2008, I moved to the University of Bristol (UK) to finish my postgraduate studies, first with an MSc in Offshore Engineering and then with a PhD in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. In 2013, I joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Yamaguchi University (Japan) as a researcher.
I am author of over 20 publications focusing on different civil engineering problems, including long-term performance of offshore wind turbines and design of pile-supported structures in liquefiable soils. My main research interests are in geotechnics and structural dynamics, related to problems of offshore and earthquake engineering.
I am a co-author of a textbook entitled "Fundamentals of Engineering Mathematics", published by the Institution of Civil Engineers, ICE Publishing. The book aims at bridging the gap between school mathematics and a first year engineering degree, providing students with an essential foundation of skills that will be valuable throughout their academic career and beyond (see also ICE Book Shop).
As part of my academic life, I have been actively involved in the knowledge transfer process by delivering Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses tailored for the offshore industry. I also serve on the technical programme committee of the International Society of Geotechnique, Materials and Environment (GEOMATE) and advisory committee of the International Conference on Offshore Renewable Energy (Glasgow, September 12-14, 2016). Recently, I organized a special session on “Methods and modern technologies in nearshore-offshore surveying and seafloor geotechnics” within the 1st International Workshop on Metrology for Geotechnics (Italy, March 17-18, 2016).
