Damien McLoughlin is Anthony C. Cunningham Professor of Marketing and Marketing Subject Area Head at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Ireland, specialising in agribusiness strategy and business-to-business marketing teaching and research. Damien has served in a number of senior leadership roles in UCD College of Business including Associate Dean (International) 2011-2017, Associate Dean (Executive Education) 2010-2011, Subject Area Head (Marketing) 2008-2011 and Associate Dean (Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School) 2004-2005.

Reflecting his expertise, Damien teaches undergraduate, graduate and executive courses in marketing and agribusiness strategy. Damien has published more than seventy papers and a book on strategy and marketing issues. His papers have appeared in journals such as Entrepreneurship, Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Research, Industrial Marketing Management and Technovation. He has also written more than twenty case studies, mainly relating to leadership and strategy issues in the food and agribusiness sector.

In building his dual expertise in marketing and agribusiness strategy Damien has held visiting positions on the faculty of the S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University (2004) the Indian School of Business (2007), Purdue University (2015 and 2017) and IMD (2016 and 2017). Between 2011 and 2014 he was a faculty member on the Harvard Business School Agribusiness seminar, an annual programme attended by 200 CEO’s and leaders from global food firms that highlights the best growth opportunities and most pressing challenges facing the industry. Damien continues to contribute to this programme as a researcher and case author. Since 2014 he has been a visiting professor of marketing at the Stern School of Business at New York University.

External appointments include service to a number of public sector organisations as a director. In 2017 the Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine re-appointed Damien to the board of Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the body responsible for innovation in the Irish fish industry, for a second three year term. Previously Damien was a Member of the Medical Council of Ireland (2008-2013) where he chaired the Audit Committee and director of the Health Information and Quality Authority HIQA (2010-2012). Damien also chaired the Marketer of the Year Award from 2011 to 2018 and the Marketing Society Research Awards from 2012 to 2016 as well as serving as a judge for a number of other awards.

Damien has been an integral part of the Bord Bia talent initiative for more than ten years, designed to support the entry of high quality graduates to the Irish food industry. Working with colleagues in UCD and Bord Bia he led the development of the innovative Bord Bia Marketing Fellowship Programme (2009- ) , the Bord Bia Origin Green Ambassador Programme (2013- ) and the Bord Bia Supply Chain and Account Management programme (2017 - ) each of which involves innovative curriculum design, collaboration with other leading business schools such MIT Sloan School of Management, Harvard Business School and IMD and an action learning model built on close collaboration between Bord Bia, UCD and the leading food and agribusiness firms around the world.

Damien's work is highly regarded and has been recognised with a number of domestic and international awards and distinctions including teaching awards from Quinn and Smurfit Schools of Business and a best paper award at the Academy of Marketing Science conference. A regular media commentator, he has contributed to a range of media outlets including Sky News, RTE Radio and Television, Today FM, Newstalk, The Financial Times, The Irish Times and The Sunday Times.

Damien holds a Bachelor of Business Studies degree from Dublin City University, a Master of Business Studies degree from University College Dublin and PhD in Marketing from Lancaster University (UK).
