Biography

As a nurse by professional background I have always had a strong interest in improving patient care and the relief of pain is unarguably one of the most important elements of all patients’ healthcare experience.  My own areas of specialist interest in pain are broad ranging but include; pain management and assessment in both acute and chronic conditions, as well as an interest in socialisation and acculturation and its impact of health care staffs responses to pain.  I am a member of the British Pain Society, and the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and I was a national committee member and newsletter editor for the Royal College of Nursing Forum for 8 years. My interest in this area means that I also have a strong publication and conference presentation profile and have developed a range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level focusing on improving professional practice in pain assessment and management. Additionally I have also undertaken training in Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and have sought to demonstrate its efficacy for patients living with chronic pain.

As a Registered Nurse I also have a strong commitment to both Nurse Education and to improving and supporting the overall ongoing development of the Nursing Profession. I am currently the postgraduate directorate lead in the Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, as well as the adult field lead for the undergraduate BNurs (Hons) programme. I have had over 20 year experience in higher education, working as a lecturer and senior lecturer in the School of Health Studies at the University of Bradford, as the Head of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Liverpool,  as the Associate Dean for Learning, Teaching and Quality, and Acting Dean for the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Hull. During that time I have gained extensive experience of a wide range of areas including: staff management, curriculum development, negotiation with external bodies including professional and statutory organisations and quality assurance processes.  As well as offering students both academic and pastoral support and running a wide range of programmes and modules across all academic levels.
