Biography

SKK Graduate School of Business (SKK GSB)

Aleksios (Alex) Gotsopoulos joined SKK GSB in 2013. Before that, he was an assistant professor of Entrepreneurship at IE Business School in Madrid, Spain and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Boston University School of Management. Alex earned his PhD and MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Alex’s research focuses on the emergence of new industries, and on how the challenges and opportunities that entrepreneurs face evolve as industries progress from infancy to maturity. He is particularly interested in how the dynamics of legitimacy, competition, contagion, and categorization affect entrepreneurs’ decision making and their ventures’ performance and survival. Among others, he has studied the early automobile industry in US, the global smartphone industry, the stock brokerage industry in Greece, and university spinoffs in UK.

Alex’s research has appeared (or been accepted) in the Academy of Management Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings, has been featured in outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and Inc.com, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation and a number of North American and European foundations.

Alex is also a passionate instructor, and has taught courses in Strategy and Entrepreneurship. “Teaching is an interactive and iterative experience”, he notes. “I particularly enjoy bringing to classroom insights from my research, highlighting opportunities and challenges than often go unnoticed by aspiring entrepreneurs. In turn, through their comments and vision, high-caliber, ambitious students challenge our conclusions and help us open new vistas for research”.
