Adrián Collado

Profesor de Educación Bilingüe y Enseñanza de Español para Extranjeros, Universidad Francisco de Vitoria

Biography

My academic work focuses on contemporary Spanish fiction and visual culture, with special emphasis on the debates about migration and national identity. I have eight years of experience teaching all levels of Spanish language, literature, film, and culture at UCLA, both traditional and hybrid format. I have also taught Spanish language classes for Heritage Speakers. I have five years of experience teaching Spanish for Business at UCLA Anderson School of Management. In addition, I have taught at CSU, Fullerton and at Charles R. Drew University for Medicine and Science, both Hispanic and African-American Serving Institutions respectively. Currently, I am teaching a graduate course on Spanish female writers at CSU, Northridge. My goal as an instructor is to create a positive and dynamic atmosphere in the classroom where students from different backgrounds and levels feel comfortable to participate and take control over their own learning. Promoting a hands-on and engaged education, I enable students to obtain a more profound understanding of the subject at hand. I make the classroom a place where knowledge is produced, interrogated, and reexamined, a space where students develop their own critical thinking and learn to collaborate, debate, and discuss with each other. My other lines of research involve Golden Age literature, with particular emphasis on the translation into English of the Spanish Comedia. I participated in the translation of La noche toledana and La viuda valenciana (Lope de Vega) and Los empeños de un enga¬ño (Ruiz de Alarcón). In addition, I co-authored the introduction of La noche toledana. All of these materials are published on the working group website that I personally created (http://diversifyingtheclassics.humanities.ucla.edu/). In September 2018, I helped producing LA Escena, the first ever Los Angeles Hispanic Classical Theater Festival. In 2012 I founded the UCLA Latin American and Iberian Film Festival.
