Description

The proposed training workshop will cover the main aspects of construction management. The topics include safety compliance, risk management, traditional and new practice in project procurement and IT applications in construction management. Further, the workshop will present detailed information on topical issues such as sustainability in construction, teamwork and leadership roles, aging infrastructure and deterioration. The workshop will involve presentations, interactive discussions.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the delegates will be able to:

  • Gaining a better understanding of organizational safety culture, and why traditional safety management systems are not adequate to achieve high performance
  • Recognizing that safety success is a function of “transformational’ change in an organizational safety culture, as well as the attitude of management and workers
  • Appreciating the challenges associated with the management, financial and contractual responsibilities of construction managers and organizations from the establishment of a project team and the instigation of a contract to the project hand-over in an international environment
  • Gaining invaluable information that may act as a guide for you in analyzing and managing risk

Day 1

Construction Safety Management

  • Developing relevant safety management indicators
  • Evaluating and promoting safety culture
  • Empowering staff to take a leadership role in executing their safety responsibilities
  • Relevant examples on how to take a fresh and proactive approach to managing safety

Risk Analysis and Management

  • Project performance and risk management
  • Systematic identification, appraisal, and management of project-related risks
  • Risk environment, human aspects to risk assessment and dealing with uncertainty
  • Quantitative methods and qualitative assessment for risk management

Day 2

Modern I.T Applications in Construction Management

  • Overview of the latest IT tools developed specifically to meet the needs of modern construction practice
  • Implementation issues, such as strategic planning for IT use in construction and developing an IT-based strategy for your organization

International Construction Management

  • Key concepts and international issues in construction project management
  • Comparison of technical, economic, managerial and cultural concepts
  • Trends related to construction project management in the competitive global marketplace
  • Market and organization viewpoints

Day 3

Best Practice in Project Procurement

  • Critical overview of different procurement approaches,
  • Step-by-step guidelines in selecting the most appropriate approach for procuring your project

People, Teams, Projects and Success

  • Projects and people (authority and responsibility, team motivation and teamwork)
  • Critical success factors for projects (the use of key performance indicators)
  • Project initiation and decisions (process for project initiation and the gateway review process)
  • Realistic project risk management from owners and contractors perspective

Day 4

Procurement Strategies and Contracts

  • Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects, including international perspective, governance, public interest, best value selection
  • Detailed case examples of PPP projects
  • Bringing a project to the market (documentation preparation, bidding and bid evaluation)
  • The use of contracts for project procurement
  • Professional contract administration

Sustainability in Construction

  • Basic concepts and international developments
  • Life cycle
  • Sustainability issues (climate change, energy, resources and materials, etc.)
  • Implementation in construction (strategies, design issues, tools and indicators)

Day 5

Infrastructure Deterioration Assessment: Buildings and Bridges:

  • Causes of damage/deterioration, delaminating, spalls, scaling, cracking, corrosion, deck deterioration, deck joints, bearings etc.
  • Inspection, levels of inspection, visual, non-destructive testing, sample selection
  • Static and dynamic load testing, laboratory based research, material properties and relationship to capacity
  • Bridge assessment, risk analysis and reliability analysis
  • Bridge condition assessment and rating, performance measures and technology used in condition and inventory data collection
  • Bridge information and Management systems, whole of life costing and other economic considerations, maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement, reliability based assessment and management
  • Modeling, parameters considered and available deterioration models
  • Repair techniques
