Learn important leadership concepts and apply them to the practical challenges of leading and managing the contemporary academic library.


As technology redefines how we access information, library leaders are called upon to provide a new kind of leadership: They must guide their staffs and constituents to understand the fast-changing information landscape and work strategically to ensure that libraries remain a vital resource for campus communities.

The Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians helps college-level librarians and administrators deepen their management skills and prepare to become more effective leaders in a time of institutional change. The program focuses on three areas of leadership—planning, organizational strategy and change, and transformational learning— with an overarching goal of increasing your leadership and management capacity.

Program Details

In this program, you will develop a long-range vision for your library that can respond to emerging informational and institutional needs. In plenary sessions and small groups, you will explore several frames for academic leadership, using them to assess your own strengths and current functions. You will meet with colleagues to complete case studies addressing key issues in management and leadership, and you will leave with an expanded repertoire of leadership tools to lead your library into the future.

Note: Participants will receive a copy of Reframing Academic Leadership by Lee G. Bolman and Joan V. Gallo as a part of the program and are expected to read it prior to arrival. This will serve as the core text for the institute and will be supplemented with nightly readings.


  • Assess the preparedness of your organization to meet current and future challenges and opportunities
  • Identify your own leadership strength and weaknesses and create action steps for utilizing strengths and develop growth areas
  • Understand the role of today’s academic library in light of emerging technological growth

  • College and university librarians with leadership and/or management responsibilities
  • Library deans, directors, and unit heads, along with those reporting to them in positions like associate university librarian or assistant library dean
  • Other campus administrators with responsibilities that routinely affect library-related functions
