Yin Wang
Assistant Professor of Accounting at Singapore Management University
Biography
Singapore Management University
I am Assistant Professor of Accounting at the School of Accountancy (SOA) of the Singapore Management University (SMU). Prior to joining SMU, I received PhD in Management Science from HEC Paris in 2018 and was Visiting PhD Research Scholar at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business in 2017. Before joining academia, I had worked in Risk and Finance Department at BNP Paribas in Paris for four years, where I was in charge of a team as Management Control Sector Manager in the leasing investment and financing business.
My main research area lies in disclosure and its real effects. Other research interests include spill-over effects of advertising in capital markets, financial intermediaries, common ownership, ESG disclosure, insider trading, earnings management, regulation, and corporate governance. In conducting my research, I rely mainly on empirical-archival methods, and I am passionate about using novel data and exploring unique settings to address new questions.
My teaching interests include Financial Accounting, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Managerial Accounting, and Private Equity. Being a teaching award winner, I am instructor of the course "ACCT101 - Financial Accounting" for undergraduate students at SMU since the Academic Year 2018-2019, where I earned SMU School of Accountancy Most Promising Teacher Award and SMU School of Accountancy Dean’s List for Teaching Excellence Award consecutively twice in 2021 and 2022. I have also been nominated for the SMU Most Promising Teacher Award selection in these two years respectively. From 2019 to 2021, my Financial Accounting class was selected consecutively by SMU SOA to be served as exemplary demonstration for junior faculty’s and PhD students’ training on teaching excellence. Before joining SMU, I was instructor of the course "Accounting: Introduction to Financial and Managerial Accounting" for Specialized Master Program at HEC Paris in Fall of AY2017-2018.
I am a strong supporter of the doctoral program at SMU SOA. I have been fortunate to be serving as a co-advisor for one of SMU SOA's PhD students in the Empirical Research Project and the PhD Thesis. To give more opportunities for PhD students to understand better the research papers, I lead PhD reading group discussions on the research papers to be presented by speakers invited for workshops and seminars at SMU SOA. I also used this group discussion as an opportunity to share with PhD students my experience in the PhD program and useful research materials that I have collected over time.
I truly believe that research and practice should be closely linked and matched. After joining academia, I still manage a close relationship with industry practitioners and learn the state-of-the-art knowledge tremendously from my personal connections in different areas, e.g., auditing, investment banking, private equity and hedge fund industry. I also invite guest speakers to my class to share their insights on different topics, e.g., current economic outlook and trend, or practical subjects like recruitment in a specific area, etc. Personally, I am active in attending the conferences organised by industry on trending themes, e.g., Digital Transformation of Financial Markets, Accounting for Sustainability and Responsible Investing, Private Equity Financing, Investing and Value Creation, Blackstone Investment Events, UBS Year Outlook conferences, Morgan Stanley Research Asia Summer School Program, Citi Global Wealth Investments Outlook, Citi Investment Management Industry Revolution Conference – APAC, HSBC Private Banking Investment Outlook conference, Ernst & Young Conference on Taxation of SFO, Mapletree Real Estate Forum, and LVMH – SMU Luxury Conference. All these experiences help me, in an attempt, to bridge the gap between practice and theory, to conduct relevant research and to provide useful advice in practice.
Regarding service for community, I always have a strong social responsibility in mind and actively contribute to the local community. To help student growth and development, I am an active contributor/donor in education sector in China, France and Singapore.
