From 1972 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1985, he studied German literature and linguistics, pedagogy and history. In 1985, he joined the ZDF (second channel of German television) as an intern and subsequently worked as a freelancer for this channel. Since 1993, he has been a perminend editor and from 1995 until 2005, he was the head of the sports main editorial desk. From 2006 to 2016 he worked as chief editor of the sports editorial department. From 1994 until 2011, he presented "Das aktuelle sportstudio" program as well as sports events like for example the football world cup. He also appeared as a moderator of the “ZDF Sportreportage” program and was several times elected TV Journalist of the Year and received the silver Herbert Award for commenting the Olympic Games in Beijing, 2008.
