Biography

Dr. Ursula M. Kuhar is a lecturer in the Arts Administration Program at the IU School of Public and Environment Affairs. Prior to this appointment, she was the executive director of the Washington Concert Opera and director and assistant professor of Arts Management at Sweet Briar College.

Dr. Kuhar has previously held positions in the higher education and nonprofit sectors at SPEA and at IU’s Office of Diversity, Equality, and Multicultural Affairs, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and Community Hospital Foundation of Indianapolis. An active music educator and mezzo-soprano, she has worked in the classroom as an educator and teaching artist with students of all ages, gives regular master classes and workshops at colleges around the country, has performed professionally throughout the U.S., South America, and Europe, and is a Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Regional Finalist.

Kuhar holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in Arts Administration and a Master’s in Music Education, Phi Sigma Iota, from Butler University; and a Doctor of Music in Voice with Distinction from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has published and presented on arts policy and leadership, curriculum design and implementation, Leonard Bernstein, and arts entrepreneurship. Committed to service, Kuhar is a reviewer for The Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society, serves on the board of directors of the Jacobs School of Music Alumni Association, and is an active member of Americans for the Arts, Association of Arts Administration Educators, and National Guild for Community Arts Education.
