Biography

Thuy Nguyen is a Postdoctoral Fellow at SPEA, where she had been a visiting scholar in 2015 and obtained her MPA in 2012. Thuy specializes in economics of corruption, conflict of interest, and regulations. Her current work focuses on privatization of anti-fraud enforcement in Medicaid health care, public disclosure of pharmaceutical industry promotional activities directed at health care providers, and the causes of the opioid crisis.

Thuy’s doctoral dissertation contributes new evidence on the cause of corruption and the measurement validity of corruption perception indexes, as well as develops a theoretical framework of cross-border corruption from firm perspectives.

Thuy has experience working for both private and public sectors as well as in academia. She worked for the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam, then as a researcher at the Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam before pursuing her academic career. She taught several graduate-level courses on research designs, impact evaluation and econometrics at Maastricht University. Since 2016, Thuy has conducted a number of policy analyses for the Vietnam Initiatives at IU, a global think tank on development policies for Vietnam.
