Tanya L. Domi is an Adjunct Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and is an affiliate faculty member of the Harriman Institute. Ms. Domi is also a Fellow with the Emerging Democracies Institute based in Washington, D.C.  She teaches human rights in the Western Balkans..

Prior to her faculty appointment at Columbia in 2008, Domi worked internationally for more than a decade on issues related to democratic transitional development, including political and media development, human rights, gender and sexual identity issues and human trafficking. These topics animate her research and teaching interests in the Balkans and the states of the former Soviet Union. She is currently writing a book on the emerging LGBT human rights movement in the Western Balkans.

During her previous policy work in Bosnia and Herzegovina implementing the Dayton Peace Accords for the OSCE Mission 1996-2000, she served in the position of Spokesperson, Counselor to U.S. Ambassador Robert Barry and Chair of the OSCE Media Experts Commission.  She has also worked on democratic transitional projects in Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Haiti, Kosovo, Montenegro, Nepal, Serbia, The Gambia, The Philippines and South Sudan.

Domi is a widely published writer and commentator. She has been published by or appeared in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, Al Jazeera America, The Washington Post, The BBC, The Institute for War and News Reporting, Transitions on Line, Oslobodjenje and La Novelliste, and has appeared on Al Jazzera America, National Public Radio, C-SPAN, CNN International and PBS Newshour. 

Ms. Domi earned a Masters of Arts degree in Human Rights from Columbia University in 2007. Her undergraduate degree was awarded by Central Michigan University in 1981 with a double major in political science and journalism.  Domi also served in the U.S. Army for 15 years.
