Susan Collins

Susan M. Collins is a nonresident senior fellow in the Economic Studies program at Brookings. She is the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Michigan, and the Edward M. Gramlich Collegiate Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Economics, University of Michigan. Her area of expertise is international economics (including issues in both macroeconomics and trade). Her research interests center on determinants of economic growth, exchange rate regimes in developed and developing economies, and issues raised by increasing cross-national economic integration. Dr. Collins is a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the NBER, and the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Dr. Collins edited or co-edited the annual Brookings Trade Forum from 1999 to 2007. Recent volumes focus on Foreign Direct Investment (2007), Global Labor Markets? (2006), Offshoring White-Collar Work (2005). She has also contributed to and co-edited the book The Economy of Puerto Rico – Restoring Growth, (Brookings Institution, 2006).

Her work has been published in numerous professional journals. Prior to her current positions, Dr. Collins has been a professor of economics at Georgetown University, and an associate professor of economics at Harvard University. She served as a senior staff economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers during 1989-90. She received her B.A., summa cum laude, in economics from Harvard University in 1980, and her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984.
