Steven A. Farmer, MD, PhD, FACC, FASE is an Associate Professor of Medicine & Public Health. He also serves as Associate Director for GW's Office of Clinical Practice Innovation. He specializes in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging, including nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. His clinical interests include the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and valvular heart disease.
Dr. Farmer earned his bachelor's degree in international relations from Stanford University. As a British Marshall Scholar, he received his doctorate in Health Services Research & Policy from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He received his MD degree from Yale University School of Medicine. In addition to his academic training, he spent several years in management consulting for CSC Healthcare and the Larvol Group as well as in venture capital / new venture management for True North Partners, LLC. He completed his internship, residency in internal medicine, and fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Farmer's research addresses contemporary national health policy issues, particularly in relation to variability in medical decision making, healthcare organizational structure, payment reform, and the costs and outcomes of care. His innovative work incorporates broad multidisciplinary expertise from the fields of cardiology, epidemiology, economics, law, and health policy. He currently leads a study on the impact of medical malpractice litigation and financial incentives on testing for coronary artery disease, a project funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Dr. Farmer is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography. His professional activities include membership in the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He serves on the American College of Cardiology PINNACLE Registry Research and Publications committee. His work has been published in Circulation, the Journal of American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
