Stephen, a Partner at Kinnford Consulting since June 2015, enters this new role after 20 years in his successful business, QQSR. He brings over 40 years’ experience as an educator, researcher, facilitator and change management consultant to a variety of clients in government, the military, the private sector and non-government organisations both in Australia and overseas.

Stephen originally specialised in sociology and social psychology. Trained in the UK, he held academic posts in Wellington, NZ, Berkeley, California (Visiting Prof in Public Health) and in Canberra, where he taught at ANU from 1974-1996. In this role, Stephen earned a major reputation as a scholarly researcher and policy developer in criminology and drug policy. His published work included papers on restorative justice and illegal drug use that have become citation classics. Stephen is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (AIM).

Stephen’s unique blend of academic training, practical experience and a lively interest in innovation creates a unique and exciting approach to underpin his work. His approach blends contemporary psychology with sociological work in organisational/cultural change. He also draws on techniques such as appreciative inquiry advanced knowledge management perspectives, open space facilitation techniques and an understanding of complexity and chaos theories to:

  • ensure best practice in leadership and strategy
  • develop listening, assertion and conflict resolution skills in work contexts and manage under-performance
  • understand and lead / influence change
  • provide executive coaching.

Some examples of major clients and recent engagements include:

  • Defence-related work including:
    • A 15 year engagement with the RAAF senior leadership team (2000-present, recognised in 2015 with a Commendation from the Chief of Air Force.)
    • Other work with Defence leaders including the Royal Air Force (UK) (2006-2009) and the Chief of Defence Force, ACM Angus Houston
    • A long standing involvement with the Australian Defence Force Academy and its reform agenda including: 1) Member, Grey Review in 1997-1998 and involved in the implementation; 2) Expert adviser, Broderick Review and Review Implementation Team.
  • On-going engagements with companies like KBR and QinetiQ building team cohesion within the company teams and with teaming with partners and clients
  • A review of the work culture of the ACT Ambulance Service Working (in association with 02C Solutions)
  • Stakeholder workshops to develop a new safety strategy for Public Transport Victoria
  • A series of summits and workshops on justice / prison issues, on issues including tobacco free prisons, HEP C management, citizen juries on imprisonment policy etc., (2010-2015)
  • Keynote Speaker at a major international conference in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina revisiting earlier work on restorative justice.
