Biography
Weatherhead School of Management
Stephen Brady joined Weatherhead School of Management after serving as a researcher, consultant, and professor for numerous leading institutions. He was Senior Operations Researcher for RAND Corporation, with eighteen years split between its headquarters in Santa Monica and the Pittsburgh office he helped establish in 2000. An avid teacher, he incorporated faculty appointments into his graduate study and RAND years. These teaching engagements included Stanford, UCLA, Naval Postgraduate School, Wisconsin-River Falls, and Bucknell.
Passionate about the robust usefulness of operations research methods, Stephen has sought out meaningful problems across diverse application areas -- especially, health, energy, logistics, and aviation operations and safety. His dissertation work found optimization-theoretic improvements in imaging methods for medicine and non-destructive industrial testing. An aviation enthusiast and pilot, he developed models to address risks surrounding Holland’s Schiphol Airport, helping to locate a new runway for expansion and alter operational policies. He joined an international team in Afghanistan to find ways to reduce violence from IEDs, and returned to the U.S. to study ways to reduce violence in other countries by improving socio-economic conditions in severely resource-constrained environments. His simulation modeling of personnel systems helped lead to a U.S. presidential order, eliminating contentious, decades-old stop-loss policies and helping reunite thousands of soldier families. Earlier work included energy modeling for Stanford Optimization Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee Valley Authority, Hydro-Quebec, Electric Power Research Institute, and International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria.
Stephen holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Stanford University, preceded by an M.S. in Statistics from Stanford, an M.S. in Management Science with Concentration in Artificial Intelligence from University of Tennessee, non-degree study at MIT Sloan School of Management, and a B.S. in Industrial Management/Management Science from Tennessee.
He will teach operations research, statistics, and operations management, with a vital emphasis on quantitative approaches to problem solving; including their practical links to new methods in machine learning and data science.
