Dr. Sonia Friedman, a distinguished IBD clinician, researcher, and teacher who is an expert on IBD and women’s health issues, is director of women’s health at the BWH Crohn’s and Colitis Center.

Dr. Friedman has a large IBD practice and often cares for patients with difficult cases that have been referred to her by other physicians. Her current research interests include IBD and fertility and pregnancy. She has also published important findings on IBD and issues related to colon cancer.

As an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, she teaches and trains medical students, residents, and research fellows. She is also a leader of IBD clinical care and research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Friedman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Stanford University and a medical degree from Yale School of Medicine. She was a medical resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her interest in IBD started when she was a gastroenterology fellow at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

In addition to publishing her research, Dr. Friedman is a prolific writer of reviews, books chapters, and other materials related to IBD. She is the co-author of the chapter on IBD in Harrison’s Textbook of Internal Medicine, the most important textbook in American medicine. Dr. Friedman is a frequent speaker and travels extensively to give lectures on IBD management to physicians and others.

Dr. Friedman is an active leader in the IBD community. She is immediate past chair of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation New England Chapter Medical Advisory Committee and was their Humanitarian of the Year for 2012. She named the “Best Up-and-Coming Gastroenterologist in Boston” in 2004 and was listed as one of best doctors in Boston in Boston Magazine in 2007.
