Weatherhead School of Management

Silvia Prina received her PhD in Economics from Boston University in 2007. Her research examines development economics and applied microeconomics with a special focus on access to savings accounts and investment in education and health. She has been and is working on several field experiments in Nepal, Mexico, Tanzania, and the U.S. Additionally, Prina is interested in not only how aspirations of the poor can be shaped but also in their role in educational attainment. Her latest efforts focus on the impact of financial access on mental health and cognitive ability.

Prina’s research has appeared in the JOURNAL OF DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS, the JOURNAL OF HEALTH ECONOMICS, and the AMERICAN ECONOMIC JOURNAL: MICROECONOMICS. She has offered numerous presentations at universities and institutions including the NBER, Yale University, and the World Bank.

Since her appointment to the Weatherhead School of Management, Prina has taught courses including Development Economics, Principles of Microeconomics, and Intermediate Microeconomics. In 2015, she received the Teaching Award from the Wolstein Society as well as her second Undergraduate Teaching Award Nomination, Weatherhead. In 2011, she was honored with a nomination for the Carl F. Wittke Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Case Western Reserve. Prina has received more than ten external grants as well as many grants from Weatherhead and Case Western Reserve for her research.
