The Robert H. Smith School of Business

Shreevardhan Lele is a Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Currently, he also serves as the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs – MBA Programs. In this capacity, he is the chief academic officer of the Smith MBA programs. Before joining the Smith School in 1997, he taught at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.

Lele teaches in the MBA and Executive MBA programs in three distinct areas: (a) ethical leadership and the role of managers in society, (b) the economics of incentives and strategic coordination using game theory, and (c) business analytics using statistics and management science. His current work centers on issues at the intersection of business and society – specifically, the moral agency of managers in selecting values and in developing new practices – and on MBA curriculum development. He has won several awards for teaching excellence. In 2002, he was among the first cohort of Fellows to be inducted into the University of Maryland’s Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Lele’s previous research was in the areas of data mining and optimal control of stochastic systems. His work has been published in several refereed scholarly journals including Operations Research, Production and Operations Management, INFORMS Journal on Computing, European Journal of Operational Research, IIE Transactions and Decision Support Systems. He has been awarded the INFORMS Computing Society Prize for innovative contributions to the field of data mining. Lele is an affiliate faculty member in the University of Maryland’s graduate program in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation. He has provided consulting/executive training to several firms in a broad range of industries. From 1998-2000, he directed the Consulting Practicum in the QUEST Program (Quality Enhancement, Systems and Teams), which is a collaboration between the Smith School of Business and the University of Maryland’s Clark School of Engineering.

Lele received a B.Tech. in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and an MA in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
