UNSW Business School

Dr. Shayne Gary is a Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at UNSW Business School. He teaches Strategic Management and also Systems Thinking & Business Dynamics courses across business post-graduate programs, including AGSM MBA, AGSM Executive Programs, and Masters of Commerce (MCom). His research in behavioral strategy examines how differences in mental models, decision rules, and strategies lead to differences in organisational performance.

Shayne has been a visiting scholar at MIT's Sloan School of Management and at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. He has considerable consulting experience working with clients to develop strategies for firm growth, corporate diversification, and mergers & acquisitions. Shayne received his Ph.D. at London Business School and his BSc degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Research grants:

  • Australian Research Council Linkage grant of $3.6 million over the period 2006-2010 to examine ‘Expertise in Senior Executives’ (with Robert Wood, Jens Beckmann, & Damian Birney)

Awards and honours

  • Jay Forrester award in 2016 for best research contribution to System Dynamics over prior 5 years
  • Australian School of Business Research Achievement Award 2010
  • Australian School of Business Excellence in Teaching Award in MBA (Executive) Program 2010
  • AGSM Award for Teaching Excellence in the full time MBA Program 2002 (Strategy core course)
