Biography
Prof. Sloan is Head of the Microwave and Communication Systems (MCS) Research Group and a Royal Society Industrial Fellow. Promoted to Professor in Millimetre-wave Electronics in 2016, Dr. Sloan joined the university after several years in industry designing microwave components and systems. His research interests comprise device characterisation and non-linear modelling, ultra broadband amplifiers, millimetre-wave couplers, scanning millimetre-wave non-destructive Test (NDT) and millimetre-wave MMIC design. Dr Sloan is an inventor of the non-reciprocal semiconductor junction circulator thus proving that magnetised semiconductor materials could be used to make mm-wave broadband, non-reciprocal devices. Dr Sloan is a recipient of an Agilent Technologies Research Award for 2010 - 2018. This sponsorship allows for research projects into ultra-wideband, millimetre-wave instrumentation components. In addition to Agilent/Keysight he works closely with WIN Semiconductors and Teratech (RAL) components. In 2014 Dr Sloan was awarded a Royal Society Industry Fellowship to advance his research into industrial applications. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the IET, a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Member of ASNT and of the ASNT Microwave Methods Committee, Member of BINDT and Chair of the THz NDT Users Group and Associate Editor for IET Microwave Antennas and Propagation. He is also CEO of Microwave Inspection Technologies Limited.
Current Teaching:
- MSc/MEng Antennas and RF Systems
- MEng 4th Year Project in microwave pipe inspections
- With Industrial Experience Tutor
- MSc Dissertations
Additionally Rob inaugurated (in 2012) the first MMIC Design and Measurements Summer School at Manchester, sponsored by Agilent/Keysight and designed for Masters level students, first year PhDs and graduate engineers.
