Biography
Robert holds an MSc in Biotechnology from University College London, with a spell at GlaxoSmithKline R&D and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Southampton from an industrial CASE studentship with Actinova. He completed a postdoctoral appointment at the National Institute for Medical Research; Londonstudying fast protein-protein kinetics measured using biophysical methods.
Robert runs the EPSRC funded Research to Enterprise program for research students and staff; an integrated university-wide programme of skills workshops, business mentoring, a popular annual event featuring well known entrepreneurs, an annual off-site residential enterprise school and other events such as Enterprise Futures at Media City. The programme has to date involved thousands of participants and was one of the first of its type in the UK.
He is involved with several biotech start-up companies including Alergenetica, an allergy vaccine R&D company based in Tenerife, Spain which has raised significant amounts of grant and venture capital finance. Between 2005-6 he was based for one day per week at the University of Manchester Incubator Company Ltd (UMIC)
Robert is also a regular writer on technology transfer issues and has written for a number of publications including national newspapers. His published academic work includes the areas of biotech start-ups and entrepreneurial intentions among scientific researchers. He has presented his work internationally at conferences including in the UK, USA, Korea, Brazil, Sweden, Netherlands and Poland.
Columbia Business School
Robert Phillips founded Nomis Solutions, a software and consulting organization that helps financial service organizations better manage pricing and profitability, and serves on the board of directors. He was previously director of pricing research at Amazon, where he led a team of data scientists and economists that developed the analytic approaches underlying pricing for Amazon’s businesses.
Before joining Amazon, Phillips was Director of Marketplace Data Science at Uber, as well as Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia Business School, and Director of the Columbia Center for Pricing and Revenue Management. He was also a visiting scholar and lecturer at Stanford Business School.
Phillips was a pioneer in developing pricing and revenue optimization and dynamic pricing in many industries including passenger airlines, cruise lines, rental cars, retail, automotive, hotels, air cargo, trucking, container shipping, and manufacturing. He served as CEO of Decision Focus Incorporated, a consulting company specializing in the application of business analytics in business and government, and as CEO of Talus Solutions, a revenue-management software and services company.
Phillips is the author of two books, Pricing and Revenue Optimization and Pricing Credit Products, and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Pricing Management. He is an INFORMS Fellow and a recipient of the INFORMS Impact Prize for his work in pricing and revenue management.
Phillips holds a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University and Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Mathematics from Washington State University.
