Dr. Cornell studied composition with Joseph Schwantner, Samuel Adler, and Warren Benson; and theory with David Beach, Robert Morris, Donald Martino, and Robert Cogan. Former faculty member, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Longy School, and Berkshire Music Center. Professor Cornell has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Cultural Council, MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, New England Foundation for the Arts, and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. Boston Musica Viva, Collage New Music, Dinosaur Annex, Pro Arte Orchestra, Alea III, Muir Quartet, Triple Helix, Baltic Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Musical Spring, Beth Stoll & Company, Blue Heron Theater, and New England Philharmonic, among others have commissioned and performed his works. His sound installations and virtual reality artworks with Deborah Cornell have been seen in performances and exhibits at Boston Cyber Arts, the ICA/Boston, Taiwan, Indiana University, Reikyavik, and over high performance computer networks at SuperComputing and other conferences. Recordings of his works as composer and conductor are on Northeastern Records and on EMI/Virgin Veritas.
