Reinhard Busse is Professor of Healthcare Management at the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Technical University of Berlin. He is also co-director of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and a faculty member at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

His research focuses on health system research, especially in a European comparison, on the tension between market and regulation as well as on performance assessment), health care research (remuneration mechanisms, integrated care, role of nursing staff), health economics and health technology assessment (HTA).

Since 2011 he has been editor-in-chief of the international peer-reviewed journal "Health Policy", since 2012 head of the BMBF-funded Health Economics Center Berlin (BerlinHECOR) and since 2015 also spokesman for the board of directors of the newly established inter-university Berlin School of Public Health (BSPH). In 2016/17 he was the chairman of the German Society for Health Economics (dggö).

It cooperates internationally with the European Observatory, the World Health Organization, the OECD, the World Bank, the European Health Management Association and the European Commission, among others. The latter funded, among other things, the EuroDRG project he managed from 2009 to 2011 in the 7th research framework program. National partners include various health insurance companies (associations), the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG), the German Medical Association and the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The latter has been supporting the Health Economics Center Berlin, which he directs, since 2012 as one of four centers in Germany.

Professor Busse studied medicine in Marburg, Boston and London and public health in Hanover. He habilitated in 1999 for epidemiology, social medicine and health system research at the Hannover Medical School. From 1999 to 2002 he headed the Madrid center of the European Observatory. In 2003 he was elected a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. From 2006 to 2009 he was Dean of his faculty at the TU Berlin.
