Biography

Harvard Kennedy School

Pippa Norris, the Paul F. McGuire Lecturer in Comparative Politics, has taught at Harvard for a quarter century. She is also ARC Laureate Fellow and Professor of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney. A comparative political scientist she focuses on democracy and democratization, public opinion and elections, political communications, and gender politics. She directs The Electoral Integrity Project, which she established in 2012 with a team based at Sydney and Harvard. She is ranked 4th worldwide in political science citations by Google Scholar, with an H index of .84. She is ranked in the top 10% of scholars across all disciplines in papers downloaded from the SSRN.

Major honors include the 2014 Karl Deutsch prize, awarded by IPSA 'to honor a prominent scholar engaged in cross-disciplinary research.' Her contribution was recognized by award of the 2011 Johan Skytte prize (with Ronald Inglehart), known informally as the 'Nobel' prize in political science. Previous Harvard winners include Sidney Verba, Theda Skocpol and Robert Putnam. She has alsobeen awarded the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Australian Laureate, the Sir Isiah Berlin Prize and a 'special recognition' award by the PSA UK, and honorary doctorates by Edinburgh and by Warwick universities.

A prolific author and international public speaker, she has published almost fifty books (many subsequently translated into dozens of languages). She has served (on sabbatical leave) as the Director of Democratic Governance at the United Nations Development Program in New York and on the executive of APSA, IPSA, and the PSA, as a consultant to the UN, OSCE, IDEA, UNESCO, the Council of Europe, NED, and UNDP. Her work has been published in more than a dozen languages. She holds a BA in Politics and Philosophy from Warwick University, and Master's and Doctoral degrees in politics from the London School of Economics. She is affiliated with the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, the Center for International Development, the Ash Center, and the Shorenstein Center.
