Biography
Philipp Kaldis is a professor in “Metabolic disorders and liver disease” at the Department of Clinical Sciences and a vice-coordinator of the Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC), where he contributes to the leadership of the centre.
He also serves as Special Chief Editor for the Cell Growth and Division section at the journal “Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology”.
Philipp received his PhD from the ETH Zürich (Switzerland), did his postdoc at Yale University School of Medicine (USA), and started his own laboratory at the National Cancer Institute (NIH, USA). After being promoted to Senior Investigator, he moved to Singapore where he worked at the Institute of Molecular Cell Biology (IMCB/A STAR/National University of Singapore). In 2019, Philipp returned to Europe to join Lund University.
Philipp was trained as a hard-core biochemist and in his own lab uses extensively genetically modified mice to study cell cycle regulation and human disease. In the last decade, his laboratory has focused on the liver, liver regeneration, liver cancer, and metabolism. He is currently studying changes in metabolism, especially in the context of fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and diabetes. Using cell biology, genetics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and genomics he is determining the mechanisms causing these diseases. These large datasets allow to identify pathways that are deregulated in these diseases and to do mechanistic studies. This work will help to provide a better understanding of liver disease & diabetes and open new avenues for therapeutic approaches.
